Aloha People!

Opasna's report on The Triathlon at Pacific Grove, 14 Sep, 2008!

Hello All!

Firstly many thanks to all the people contributed to the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society on my request in 2007 and 2008. All the money you contributed is officially in the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society's bank to be used for cutting edge research and patient support. My Story.....
The cancellation of the Treasure Island triathlon in Nov 2007 due to an oil spill in the Pacific ocean was not fun. I had been training for 3+ months with my teammates from Team in Training by then and we had nothing to show or achieve at the end. Multiple fits and starts later, I got around to signing up for The Triathlon at Pacific Grove on 14 Sep, 2008 and this time I DID IT!

Many things went wrong the night before - from my bicycle tube's valve pin breaking off to mistakenly riding on broken glass on a road to a restless sleep.... On the day of the race, we biked a pleasant 4 miles from our hotel to the event at 5:30 am in darkness, super cool! The water was cold at 63 degrees at 7:30 am when my race started...The swim waves of participants go by by sex and age...In the water, I was unable to swim at my normal pace with all the people cheering, ambitious participants kicking each other and the adrenalin rush so I kept powering through expending a lot of unnecessary energy..On the bike and while running, I was a crowd delight....As I came close to finishing a lap and the crowd cheered, I gave them drama by overtaking people or just by sprinting and waving and shouting.....

I dont think I took a breath of fresh air normally (at my practiced exercise pace) throughout the race but boy did I have a lot of fun doing the triathlon!!! You can and should do an endurance event once in your life :) :) There are half-marathons and century rides and walks to suit everyone's interest! Next I will aim for an Olympic distance triathlon....Thanks again for all your mental, $$ and emotional support!

The Team's Story....

The Silicon Valley Team in training Triathlon team had major setbacks:
- Jim's lymphoma came back and he is undergoing chemo at Stanford hospital currently
- Doug has a secondary cancer and surgery is scheduled for Sep 22, 2008
- Don participated in the triathlon but had to be pulled out of the race after the swim and taken to the hospital for tests....
But they are all strong, fun and confident survivors...We are all very proud of our team honorees and hope for the best!!!

And whats most important is.....
Team in Training brought ~ 340 amateur triathletes like me to The Triathlon at Pacific Grove from all over the US and together we raised $1.2 Million for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society! Go Team! Cheers to more research to save lives!!!

Its time to change again!

It took some cyclical iterations of denial leading to a random lapse of health for me to finally realize that stress was catching on to me. Added to the physical exhaustion aspect was the preceding emotional meltdown - a directly correlated event where all my pent up frustrations and anger erupted like a volcano. Holding on to things is not a trait of mine, or is it? When it comes to daily life no one can stop me from speaking my mind. Direct communication while not appreciated by some is good for the mind and soul because one feels best when what you think is what you say :) Unfortunately, to my surprise I do not apply this style well when it comes to human relationships. Family, friends and coworkers with whom I have an emotional connection I let things pile on for weeks and months until its almost too late. This in return catches by surprise the affected other person who then makes efforts to revive - often too little too late!

Leaving aside others for a minute, I think I have not even taken the time to understand myself for a few months. Back in April, I had an internal debate and then again in May but procrastination and half-hearted efforts in areas of interest resulted in meager if any results. Escaping seemed to be the easier route which is what I did through June-July by traveling and making merry while enduring an onslaught of work. The laziness and escapism is evident even as I look at my blogger dashboard - there are some dozens of drafts that were never completed, ideas or feelings that were never synthesized.

While procrastinating my personal thinking and thereby postponing decisions for my future has been my modus operandi so far; its time now for making some long due changes!!!

First, where did it all begin. Yesterday was a glorious Friday morning - there were no 7:30/8 am calls with international offices so I took my time to get ready. Munched on some cereal while reading the news, took a long shower and then decided to ride my motorcycle to work after a long hiatus. Of course this required some preparation, finding the gear (helmet, gloves and jacket) and going to a gas station to fill gas and inflate the tires. This is where it all hit me! The malfunctioning air pump machine meant it took me about 10-15 mins trying to inflate tires. As soon as I was finally done, and ready to take my long due (last year daily, now monthly/quarterly) ride I felt the world spinning and I had to just keep sitting on the bike with my head down on the fuel tank. Removing the gloves and helmet and opening the jacket made me realize how hot I was. After a couple minutes of stillness I felt capable enough to ride back home. Once home I ripped off all the layers to realize my shirt and jeans were completely drenched with my sweat. Some glasses of cold water and sitting in front of the fan finally made me feel calm. Few minutes later I drove to work in my car completely cold with high air conditioning and went on with life. But the single instance of a random heat-stroke or severe dehydration finally made me think hard.

Later in the day, I went to see my doctor who after making all the checks (blood pressure, sugar, hemoglobin, thyroid, EKG) declared I was in good health and should not worry :) What I learnt while waiting through the different tests was even more relevant. I ended up reading this article called The Rewards of Relaxation: Why Slowing Down Is Healthy in one of the magazines. It reinforced the idea that wasting time or doing nothing is good - it helps recharge the mind and body. It also explained why relaxing can sometimes be especially difficult for women who are efficient practitioners of multi-tasking, to-do-lists and getting things done. The final point of the article was that a task focused mind is not free enough to think creatively - "When we're engaged in "mindless" activities -- taking a stroll, listening to music, soaking our feet -- our minds are free to sort through the accumulated information stored there, making connections and finding answers that a focused, directed mind is too busy to make."

This Friday was the first time in 7-8 months that I left work early at 4:15 pm to go see the doctor but it was a step in defining boundaries between work and life. Ultimately, its left to every person in the work environment to look out for him/herself and protect oneself from a continued unfair onslaught of work. Its apparently never been a priority on normal (exceptions always exist in small %s) managers radars to monitor and protect hard-working people from being burnt out. After all taking for granted is a phenomenon in every aspect of life!

As if on cue, I took this entire weekend to relax, sleep, read, watch TV and do no chores; for once a messy home rocks if I am totally de-stressed! I also took the first steps to focus and think about life and my real aspirations not those artificially accelerated due to tags of $$$s associated with them. Fulfilling a fortune cookie message from many months ago that still adorns my bedside table I committed to "Stay close to your inner self. You will benefit in many ways.".

No major changes have been made yet the seeds have been sown :) I have ensured I eat proper meals and sleep for the sake of sleeping not out of sheer exhaustion. In August 2007, I made a lot of changes and all the decisions worked out in my favor so I am hoping my annual 2008 retreat and the subsequent changes will all help me grow in the right directions towards a more fulfilling life!

Tough Life means Happy Times!

Okay! I'll admit it - I am sweating it! When a friend warned me that this triathlon business is a lifestyle change I didn't really pay too much attention. I have been a bad athlete life long; 2 years ago I decided I was going to overcome my body's deficiencies and not let it dissuade me from doing sporty stuff going forward. A few days ago I thought - so it will get tough for a few days, I can deal with this triathlon training. Can I? Really, I think I'm just barely getting by!

Yesterday was day 1 in the awesome Team in Training program I have signed up for. After 2 hours of running/exercise workout with the team I came home all peppy. A hot shower and 1 hour later I realized I was half dead :) Sleepily yawning at 11:30 pm, I thought it would be great to hit the bed early and snore. Alas, this lazy body was too tired and sore to relax!

Today was day 2, a 45 minute afternoon swim made me realize how out of shape and technique I am. In 2004, my swimming style was great - I had just taken a class which had helped improve my breathing, arm action, flotation and most importantly I had learnt to swim without expending too much energy. The coach kept reiterating that if I swam in a relaxed state I was going to feel much better and swim much longer than when I swam super fast flailing my arms and legs for the love of God. Its the same for running - I now know that to run at my pace and endure longer distances is better than running 100 meters at my fastest speed.

I had retained some of the swimming know-how till 2005 when I actually lived a stone's throw away from Pacific Beach, CA or as they call it in local San Diego lingo PB. But having used the 7 pools (I know!) in my apartment complex no more than once or twice per month has its effects after all. Today was disastrous - I could barely finish 1 lap and I was exhausted. Although, I kept going I knew that I was using up way too much energy than needed to travel the distance of the pool. Wayworn with the aquatic trek, I showered and was all set for the evening work meetings. Lo and behold within an hour I was crashing with immense energy loss!!

I tried eating, sleeping, relaxing - nothing worked; I was literally energy deficient. This lead to reading about good diets after working out. Certain interesting links presented themselves:

While I spent most of today recovering from bad/sour events happening around me telling myself - "You work at a smile and you go for a ride", lines from a popular song "You had a bad day" by Daniel Powter; I really started believing each day is gloriously great this evening! :) My sister casually announced over the phone that my 7 months and 2 days old nephew has started swimming. I was jubilated, emphatic and laughing at the irony all at once. Yes, while his 27 year old aunt is struggling to swim, my nephew is all set to swim for life - he is swimming without tubes, without help on his own! Supercool - bless his heart, he just made my day...I will do a triathlon with him when he is a teenager!

The night got better as I watched Megan McCormick unravel the treasures of Egypt on globetrekker, a show on one of the publicly funded channels. Can I have her job? Getting paid to travel and journal experiences is really my dream job! Just 1 show seen and I am already a big big fan of Megan, looking forward to more fun journeys :)

The day winded down for me restfully - the body is not so sore now, my nephew can swim (yohoo!) and I heard news of 3 friends getting engaged (congrats!). The world is indeed a happy place to live on, who said I was having a bad day and considering a move to Mars? :)

Manic energy, sleepless nights and more..

Yesterday was a very strange day...In one single albeit elongated day, I was able to:
- priortize projects at work so I knew what to focus on when this week
- put my foot completely down and make a case for why I thought we shouldnt do project X
- bid on eBay for the object of my affection Kawasaki Ninja 250 cc motorcycle
- spend 3 freaking hours at the hospital getting some basic tests done (what is even the point of an appointment! American healthcare had put on its worst show...ahem sarcasm intended)
- attend a talk on Kiva.org
- do some work while struggling with a headache all thanks to the California heat and 1 beer at a going away party for a colleague....For someone who has never been drunk, such a reaction from my body leaves me shocked...
- do 2 hours of research on micro-finance in Eritrea
- rescue a friend with a flat tire late in the night
- come back and attend while meaningfully contributing (*rare*) to a late night conference call with our India team
- eat cereal for dinner at midnight

After all this, I expected to fall asleep and enjoy the pleasure of deep slumber as soon as my body hit the bed at 3 am. Instead, my brain experienced an occurence - one of those manic/frenzied/unexpected surge of energy moments. All of a sudden the atoms started colliding if you will and despite all attempts I kept thinking of new ideas for Janar on building Magis and site improvement ideas for Kiva.

Of course I had provided enough context to my mind during the day for these discussions to arise. I had a nice long conversation with Janar while waiting for my appointment at the hospital. Despite cash flow problems, Janar is very upbeat these days, has new plans, is back to his daily marathon workouts and an ever-increasing opportunity log. I think our new plan to tag team and make presentations at popular CA Jesuit high schools on all kinds of green and do-good topics is a step in the right direction. While selflessly talking about other non-profit ideas we can use the networking opportunities to increase assets under managemet with Magis. I am hoping that by the end of this year Magis will be close to if not net-positive!

Coming back to mania/fever: I had hibernated the laptop and was all tucked in when these ideas started popping in my brain - suggestions for Kiva. Of course laziness/procrastination won plus I didn't really want the guys at Kiva to think I was some crazy person trying to overwhelm them with 10 emails in one day. So I did the bad thing - after tossing and turning while drumming up things for 1.5 hours I finally dozed off. The first chance I got this morning at work I sat down to write all the things I had thought of. Lo and behold I had forgotten half of the ideas. This is bad, v. bad and its not the first time - since I like to write I have been in such situations before in the car, shower, meeting, lunch and even lounging on the couch at home; when random but cool ideas have struck me but just out of laziness I havent noted them down which means all those thoughts somehow evaporate and are gone forever. Never penned or typed down they are lost in some hidden cavities in my brain.

With continued nights of low sleep intake, I am hoping the brain tsunami will stike me more often AND this time I will be all gungho post-it note and pen all handy to write these babies down as soon as they occur to me!

Read these words on kivachronicles which struck a chord in me!
"If you're an entrepreneur, you should sound more confident than you are. If you're a social entrepreneur, you should be more inspirational than you feel. If you are an introverted social entrepreneur, you will face even more problems.

I struggled with depression for much of my young adult life. Sitting close behind a great optimism for other people lied a cloud of pessimism directed inward. In my short career in the corporate world, this pessimism would hang over me for weeks at a time. I would come home from work just wondering how I was going to escape the meaningless cycle I seemed to have fallen into. "

Further down on the same page one of the commenters Kevin Jones said...

im convinced that normal people don't become successful entrepreneurs. only people who really really need to succeed to make a statement or learn something or transform something through the crucible of business. each of my businesses was a step along a journey to become who i needed to become. my pilgrimage has been through business.

Marathon Musings

I spent first few weeks this year planning my marathon spree but the inaction since then has been killing me. The plan was to build stamina for a marthon and not throw it all away like 2006. For 2007, I had planned a 6 month series full of a 5k, 10k, half marathon and then marathon. Once I got to the full marathon, I would get to blow some steam and then start the same cycle again. In this way I hoped to achieve 3 cool things: maintain stamina, keep fit year round and see new places that I go to run at. This was a good plan, all it needed was execution.

I kickstarted the preparation on 9th March: 1 hour of pilates followed by 3 rounds of the park. 1.5 miles in 20-25 minutes was not good at all but it was day one, so anything goes! I followed it up with running 2-3 miles everyday. Gradually, I was up to 11 minute mile runs.

However, I missed on my 1st goal - the Napa Valley 5K! Like an amateur, I ran the evening before and pulled my left thigh muscles. I planned with hope the night before for everything and even got up at the ungodly hour of 4 am so I could drive to Napa and run but alas the pull was still there in the morning. So I made the executive decision of not going for the run! It totally killed my spirit. Sheer dissapointment, I had even postponed a vacation around the 5k date; all that for nothing.

But I took it in stride, continued running and successfully finished the 5K fun run at work in April. In fact, I improved my timing to 37 mins, which is 1 min better compared to the fun run in August 2006, I guess thats something positive to be proud of.

Since then I have had binges of Forrest Gump days when I ran like crazy till my lungs literally were out of air and exceptionally stellar regular running weeks. But due to evening classes, work and a hundred other excuses I have not been able to run for more than 2 weeks nonstop.

At this point I haven't built the stamina or kept fit - basically I am failing miserably at my plan. My root cause analysis pinpoints that determination is not the problem here, its discipline. I lack self-discipline. So I must find a coaching program that helps me train rigorously and regularly. Hopefully, I can still make up for lost time and meet my fitness goals before 2007 is up!

A new spring every week!

To be amused by what you read--that is the great spring of happy quotations.

I am a great fan of quotes, in fact I read at least 5 new quotes every day. Here are some that reflect my mood today:
[Spring is] when life's alive in everything.
Christina Rossetti (1830 - 1894)
An optimist is the human personification of spring.
Susan J. Bissonette

Inside myself is a place where I live all alone and that's where you renew your springs that never dry up.
Pearl Buck (1892 - 1973)
So why was today a good day? I was down the last few days and nothing would get me out of it. The recurring flu was not helping my cause. This down syndrome has been hitting me again and again; it has been relapsing shall I say? But I am an optimist, every time it hits me I start building my web again akin to the undefeated spider. This week I hoped and looked out for small things to rock my boat. Another quote coming your way:

I adore simple pleasures. They are the last refuge of the complex.
Oscar Wilde (1854 - 1900), The Picture of Dorian Gray, 1891
On Monday, I found pleasure in working hard at the office and enjoying my favorite TV shows, thats a simple life.

Tuesday, I went down to the office cafe twice but both times I could not find anything appealing to eat so I decided to not give up on my desire for good food. I waited till I finished an assignment I was focused on till 3 pm, left work with no idea of what I wanted to eat. Randomly, I went to the Prolific Oven bakery and viola I tried something new - a Mexi-Chicken panini and boy was it good. It felt like Beethoven's symphony as I gorged on the mesquite chicken, the fresh avocado and the savory grilled peppers. The side salad was no less. I felt deja vu. Waiting for the right lunch and then finding supreme delight in it felt real.

Today, a series of fortunate events made me a super happy person and it was a new spring in my life all over again :)
- The project at work that had made Friday and Monday busy and yesterday uncertain today was all of sudden in green. Hooray!
- An hour at my favorite Toastmasters club was super fun.
- The soup at the cafe was so good, I bought 2 cups of it :) I even recommended it to 5 different coworkers. It was called Garden Vegetable Minestrone but it was so spicy I am sure it had some Thai or Indian herbs.
- I have been planning for my marathon spree since weeks and the inaction was killing me. The plan is not to build stamina for a marthon and then throw it all away like 2006. For 2007, I am planning a 6 month series full of a 5k, 10k, half marathon and then marathon. Once I get to the full marathon, I get to blow some steam and then start the same cycle again. I get to achieve 3 cool things: maintain stamina, keep fit year round and see new places that I go to run at. This is a good plan, all it needs is good execution. I kickstarted the preparation today: 1 hour of pilates followed by 3 rounds of Moitozo park. 1.5 miles in 20-25 minutes is not good at all but today is day one, so anything goes!
- As I walked home tired, I checked the mailbox and there it was - my graded paper on "The private diaries of Agrippina". This was the final paper I wrote under excruciating personal circumstances for my literature class on Roman emperor Nero and the three women he loved and killed.

All these very silly events just made my day. God is indeed as Ms. Arundhati Roy has famously cited in small things!

What a day! One must wonder how down I must have been to really feel so happy!

Food for thought or Thought for food?

Last night I spent hours reading my blog (for the lack of maintaining a personal journal) right from the beginning. It felt nice, berry nice (in the words of Borat) to read and remember all that I have been through in the last few years. Some posts were just plain boring, some were inspiring and yet the most fun ones were those that were personal memoirs and reminded me of how I had grown from a brash yuppie student to a grounded adult cum responsible professional.

As I spend my vacation with the family in cold-snowy Quebec, my best pastimes are sipping hot tea or coffee and devouring spicy and sizzling food.

On the same note, I have been a passionate connoisseur of coffees the last few months visiting new coffee houses, getting brewing lessons and volunteering as a barista to make the 4 o'clock cappuccino at work.

Year 2007 is around the corner and as we all think about New Year resolutions, I find myself procrastinating about healthy food and exercise habits.

The Mercury News article "CHANGING FOOD HABITS: Kitchen resolutions" definitely has some interesting ideas to offer. I already followed one of the ideas by learning a favorite family recipe from my Mom today. I also looked at cool food making videos on How to make easy recipes on About.com

Herz saying Cheers to 2007! Hoping for less junk and more healthy food; more marathons and less lazy weekends; more happiness and less sorrow and finally more peace and less stress.

Fear Factor

Fear Factor is a tremendously famour show on NBC where teams compete to win a large sum of money. The competitive task can be just about anthing from running up a hill to eating the guts or shit of an animal. Thats just disgusting. Yeah it is! Recently, I saw Fear Factor host and standup comedian Joe Rogan perform at the San Jose Improv in downtown San Jose. Boy was he good or what! His first joke was: " The only reason I agreed to host Fear Factor was that I thought it would never run more than a few weeks...Who would've thought we would find so many stupid people who were willing to eat God knows what for some money...And here I am hosting the Nth season of Fear Factor and encouraging dumb contestants"

Personally, I have a lot of appreciation for courageous people who fight their fears! Just as well people in general are God or Nature fearing and get shit scared especially of lawyers, police officers and doctors. For instance, any time a doctor recommends a biopsy for someone we know whistles start blowing in our heads. People are scared to their wit's end for no apparent reason. Yes there is reason to be worried if you get a warning call from a cop or if the doctor recommends an MRI but the worry should be focused on grasping what has the triggered those actions and on how to best tackle all future scenarios. This is what I call positive or useful stress that leads you to take some action and intiative. Then there is the other worry which is purely negative and has no value or purpose. It is just an amalgamation of ambigious statements, half-baked theories and ignorance. I for one have known one too many people in my life who self-inflict themselves with this negatiev form of mental stress at every juncture in their lives. To me its annoying, to some its a way of life....

Society Against Suicide

Something shook me to the deepest core of my blood cells today. It was the tragic news of a loved one passing away in the prime of her life. Later I found out that it was a suicidal death. Nothing had prepared me for this. A beautiful, young and bright student; my brain was going numb pondering as to what might have compelled her to take this drastic step. In hindsight, it doesn't really matter what made her take the final plunge, what matters is that a momentary lapse of self-confidence and a surge of depression has created a collossal loss in the lives of her family members and friends. I have made the decision to devote my time towards the research and prevention of suicide.

Initial Research:

Suicide (from Latin sui caedere, to kill oneself) is the act of willfully ending one's own life; it is sometimes a noun for one who has committed or attempted the act.

Suicide is viewed in varying ways among the cultures, religions, legal and social systems of the world. It is considered a sin or immoral act in many religions, and a crime in some jurisdictions. On the other hand, some cultures have viewed it as an honorable way to exit certain shameful or hopeless situations. Persons attempting or dying by suicide sometimes leave a suicide note.

Many suicidal people attempt suicide which does not end in death, this is called an "Attempted Suicide" or "Parasuicide". Generally, those with a history of such attempts are almost 23 times more likely to eventually end their own lives than those without. Sometimes, a person will make it look like he tried to commit suicide, without actually succeeding (as a cry for help from those he hopes care). This is called a "suicidal gesture". It can be done either by a non-lethal, non-damaging method that still leaves clear signs of the attempt, or by counting on somebody to be back in time to rescue the apparently suicidal person. On the other hand, a person who genuinely wishes to die may fail, due to lack of knowledge about what he is doing, unwillingness to try methods that may end in permanent damage if he fails, or an unexpected rescue, among other reasons. This is called a "suicidal attempt".

Statistics:

Over the last 60 years the suicide rate worldwide has tripled. Suicide is the 2nd largest cause of death among college students and the 3rd largest cause of death between the age of 15 and 24. More persons die by suicide than by homicide. Data from a survey conducted by the American College Health Association revealed that 9.5% of all students surveyed (16,000) had contemplated suicide while 1.5% had actually attempted suicide.

Psychologists have identified the teenage years as one of the most difficult phases of human life. Teenagers must make key decisions about their future, develop their identities, change schools and meet a new sets of friends, find out about their family's past, et cetera. Many young people have difficulty coping with these stresses with the onset of mood altering hormones. Growing competition and peer pressure are only rising by the day. This onslaught in rapidly developing countries is even more severe where personal depression and professional success go hand in hand and are a stark reality for the youth.

For instance, out of every three cases of suicide reported every 15 minutes in India, one is committed by a youth in the age group of 15 to 29. A study conducted by the Vellore-based Christian Medical College on teenagers in the Southern Indian state of Tamil Nadu, especially in the Vellore region, found that the average suicide rate for women is as high as 148 per 100,000, and 58 per 100,000 for men. Worldwide, this rate is 14.5 per 100,000. Of the 154,000 total number of suicide cases recorded in the whole of India in 2002 some 50,000 came from the four south Indian states of Kerala, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh and the Union Territory of Pondicherry. This statistic is even more alarming than the rising population.

If by chance you are not visiting my website to ponder or think about suicide prevention but are actually thinking about ending your life.........Please Please Please do me a favor and read this first.....It only takes 5 minutes

If you are thinking about suicide......Read this first

My aim in putting all this information together is two fold:

1. To increase awareness:

Each year thousands of people commit suicide, and 70% of those people tell someone or give warning signs before taking their own life. Stop A Suicide, Today!

Knowledge about something gives us the power to fight it. Please read below some articles about how to identify signs of suicidal tendencies. Even if you never feel depressed this information might help you identify the signs of manic depression in someone you love and give you the tools to save them. If you are a student please learn more about the 2nd largest death cause and use the power of knowledge to build awareness and help groups in your school, college, dorm, etc. Please please do not make fun or dishearten someone who is already emotinally pained. Remember that kindness, humility and sympathy are good virtues to possess.

2. To create proactive societies and organizations in all parts of the world for the prevention of suicide

As I suspected my first research efforts have presented minimal resources for suicide prevention and suicide rehabilitation in India and Indian colleges. I hope to garner some interest from fellow Indians to create more awareness and support groups across Indian colleges.

Also on the local front, I would like to volunteer with local bodies in California to use my time and skills for suicide prevention.

It is my belief that society and society alone; consisting of you, me and all global citizens can do something to prevent the rise of this unwieldy death cause that wipes away thousands of young lives each year. Instead of blooming in their prime, a few lovely buds wither away in the wintery night...

Stanford Cardinals beat the UCLA Bruins

A source of tremendous joy, excitement and entertainment for me this weekend was the Mens Basketball game at the Maples Pavilion, Stanford. Both Stanford and UCLA teams looked in good shape initially and were giving each other a run for their money to take the 3rd spot in the PAC-10 rankings.

As the game progressed, just like a bottle of good wine, the Cardinals started showing more and more of their class and character and the Bruins could do nothing to undo the sparkling effect of the ever so cute Chris Hernandez. Chris led Stanford to a 78-65 win over UCLA while scoring an all time career high of 37 points. That does not go to say that the team did not put in a solid effort. Scott Allen, sports editor at the Stanford Daily best summed up the team's performance with:

"Stanford seems to have found at least one recipe for surviving the rest of the season without its leading scorer Dan Grunfeld: Seven guys play solid basketball while one plays completely out of his mind."

Matt Haryasz was also a great contributor to the team on Sunday. While the Cardinals ruled, UCLA star player Dijon Thompson struggled against the Stanford defense. Jordan Farmar was the only one who tried to fuel a second half resurgency on the Bruins part but his efforts were undermined by the over performance of Chris Hernandez. Coach Trent Johnson looked more than happy with the Cardinals performance.

With four more games to go, all I've gotta say is "GO STANFORD!"

The Ideal Day! Was it really?

In some ways today was an ideal day. Well not at first, not really. I got up late as usual and rushed away to work. Work was okay: relaxed as well as fast paced as it should be. Learnt some lessons in life via deliberations and interactions with people. Thereafter, for once I left work early and hurray I went to the gym. This was a long awaited beginning of sorts. I knew I needed to exercise once I had realised that I wasn't snoring through the night. Perhaps I was getting mentally tired but not physically....Or is it perhaps that I sleep better on the left side of the bed and not on the right....

The next big surprise of the day was that after an hour's workout I felt revived and superb. I came home, relaxed for a few minutues, put on some music and then did the bit that I have been avoiding forever: cooking some good food. Its not that in the last 2 months I haven't cooked dinner. I have several times but definitely not as regularly as I would prefer! The most important part is that today for the first time I cooked the way I like to with great interest and with my heart. For the last few months I guess that hadn't happenned. I was so tired and so angry all the time that enjoying the process of cooking dinner for myself was never a priority....

So ya that boring chain of events has come to an end....From now on every day is going to be even more sunny and full of energy filled activities.

Wasn't this like an ideal day: me doing every regular thing that I should always do but never end up doing?

Not ideal for some other reasons: did not sleep early, did not bathe in the morning and did get mad at someone who tried to bully me.

Okay enough about me! Here are some great news items that caught my eye today. First the funny one with real serious implications::

All you guys out there, are you ready for this piece of information?

Laptops 'a threat to male fertility'
OKay so this is serious business: Guys might need to change their computing habits to maintain good health.

The next funny bit comes courtesy my very own Desh i.e. India....Cellular providers in India are now providing subscribers a new service that allows them to view a movie on their EDGE technology configured cell phones...Isn't this funny ? Okay ya so if you can't get tickets to a movie that's sold out and you can't wait for the DVD to come out, you just watch it on your small screen on your mobile phone...

Indian Movie to Debut on Cell Phones

After all this fun stuff how about appreciating a real nice deed done by a man I really look up to for his work, life and passion for persuasion. He is none other than noted Venture Capitalist Vinod Khosla who donated money for addition of educational resources to his alma mater Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi.

Vinod Khosla's $5-million grant for IIT

Okay last funny bit for the night:

Catherine Zeta Jones tells Jay Leno on the Tonight Show that its amazing what people believe! She was saying that people have actually come up to her and asked her about T-Mobile pricing plans and their 1-800 number. And she was like "Can you believe it? I have literally had to tell people that I just say "T-Mobile Get More"..I don't know anything else about them..."

Sleep Deprivation Triggers 'Hunger Hormones'

Oh my God! This completely caught me off guard....Dear God reading this article has made me realise how true it is...When I sleep less I do get more hungry ! I should now follow a strict sleep pattern..No more sleeping after 1 am and getting up at 7 am....I have to sleep well..At least a 8 hour sleep daily will have to be the order of the day....No late night TV or books...Sleep is important....Just a few days back someone at work said that he lives for sleep! Yes he looks forward to a restful sleep at the end of the day...Thats his key motivation in life...

Medical science and new studies never fails to surprise me !

Special trains to promote condoms, fight AIDS

Special trains to promote condoms, fight AIDS

What an innovative idea? How well it will work I don't know but hey its an idea...It will do something! Better than doing nothing about this tremendous looming disaster waiting to happen...India, China and Thailand are leading the race for maximum AIDS victims..With 1 billion people its no surprise that India is headed to win this race..But this is one race we shouldn't be wanting to win...Not only is it disastrous but the HIV virus has a multiplicative effect and the faster our Health ministry realises this and does something about it the better....

Baby steps are fine at least they are steps in the right direction: to increase AIDS awareness.

Are you 420 friendly ??

Are you ? Arrre yoou ?? I'm trying to ask you this in typical Phoebe (of Friends fame) style, you know when she asks the same thing in 3-4 different moods/nerves..Nobody except her can do that and carry that off so well!!

Back tracking to the main topic for this post...Well you know I was talking about looking for something on Google in my last posting...The query was "420 friendly"..If you are like me and don't know what the hell it means than don't really answer the question "Are you 420 friendly ??" without checking the meaning....

I cam across this weird acronym/abbreviation/slang/lingo whatever you prefer to call it while going through various postings on Craigslist.com, be it for an apartment or a rideshare or whatever....By doing little research, I found out that 420 derived from 20th of April, the day 4/20 is recognized by many as "national smokers day", the day when the grass is mowed by thousands across the US of A....

So when someone asks you if you are 420 friendly and this is true if you are trying to rent an apartment with someone be sure to say yes only if you are pot friendly....Dictionary.com aptly defines it as "Slang for smoking marijuana" ....

So herz something new that I learnt today!! Phew! Good thing I looked it up and did not say a dumb/ignorant yes to a prospective roommate!

More about 420 Friendly :: 420 on Wired, 420 on Google and 420 on Yahoo.

p.s. Good headline :: Former Bush state is 420 friendly

Breathe girl breathe !!

This is what my swimming instructor tells me constantly...These days I'm trying to enjoy the sun while reviving my long forgotten swimming skills..To my utter disappointment, I can do everything a beginner swimmer should be able to do -- bob, freestyle, backstroke, all the drills, everything but BREATHE....and this is driving me nuts...I am the best floater in the class and can float forever on my chest or back, my strokes are elegant but I can't swim more than 3/4 th of the pool..Why ? because I don't breathe well..It sucks...I try so hard yet, eventually each time I turn my head to get air I take in gulps of chlorinated water.....Zora tried everything maybe my head is too high, maybe too low, maybe I dont turn but lift my head, maybe I don't exhale before trying to breathe in.....Nothing is helping me, no amounts of practice nothing....

This is very disappointing for me....My aim when taking this class was to learn to swim decently and at least take 1 lap at a time..But lo and behold this bloody breathing business is nasty....Not only am I completely drained of oxygen and energy when I get out of the pool but I am also heavily filled with a gallon of chlorinated water....That results in a lot of sneezing and of course a rushed visit to the restroom :).......Well there are 4 classes left in the quarter..Who knows maybe by the last class there will be a miracle and I will learn how to breathe and thus swim my first lap across the length of the pool....We already saw a miracle today in Arnie, one of the oldest guys who had never swum ever before joining this class..Today he did it on his own...He went to the deep end and came back to the shallow end of the pool and he did this more than once...We all clapped for him...It must've been very difficult for him to overcome his fear for water and do this !

Talking of sports, did ya'll know that 37 former or current Stanford students are a part of the US Olympics team 2004. ..Good luck to the Kirk sisters, who are the first pair of sisters to be in the Olympics representing the same team, the US swimming team...GO CARDINAL!

What A Crickety Night!

last night was something..i was up all night following that ever so exciting game of cricket between arch rivals: India & Pakistan on the fair grounds of Sri Lanka's Premdasa stadium....as the American population is not so aware about cricket (think something more complicated than baseball) therz always this problem of how to watch the cricket match....it is always covered by some random cable channel that is highly oversubscribed and unavailable to lesser mortals like me.....

for those curious to understand something about cricket checkout:
http://www.cricinfo.com/
http://us.rediff.com/cricket/index.html

anyways, i was trying to keep up with the game online...it cud've been a great game had the Indian team given the Pakis a run for their money...however, that was not to be.....after a swashbuckling performance by Shoaib Malik, the Pakis were great guns with 300 runs posted....India alas, with 7 batsmen cud not match up the standards and lost out...if only one player wud had stood by Sachin, India JEET hi jata...Pakistan won a well deserved match but it cud/wud have been so much fun if the Indies had at least lost neck to neck.....

enough of cricket though....staying up last nite also gave me that oh so not available time to redesign my humble abode on the internet..that was 1 cool thing accomplished over the weekend....i try to forget that i slept thru most of Sunday-the day and hence skipped swim/gym/shopping and what not....lazy me....

nocturnal me it seems will be up tonite as well-- i m now hooked to the blog biz and all so excited about re-starting my childhood habit of writing loads of snippets every week....back then it was more stories and/or poems provoked by mood swings....hope my new blogspot will give me a new channel to express my thoughts on the latest happennings in the world and my life...
